Congratulations to Alfie for his successful 9th Kyu grading on Friday! His first step on a long journey, and on his way to catching up with his dad!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be graded to 3rd Dan under Sensei Gary Swift 8th Dan Kyoshi. It was a tough grading but I made it 🙂 a big thank you to Leslie Forester for his assistance with both driving us there and back and as a partner in my Kata Kaisetsu and Kihon Gumite.
Also congratulations to Carolyn Watson and Mike Diggle of Plymouth University Wado Ryu Karate Club for their 1st and 2nd Dan success, respectively.
All the best
Sensei Oren … Sandan 🙂

During the last training session we covered kata Pinan Nidan in detail, trying to find ways to best remember and memorise the techniques and stances.
I briefly discussed with some of the students about the many different ways that kata can be practiced to better understand it and learn it.
http://www.karatebyjesse.com/51-awesome-ways-to-practice-k…/
This is an article by a great Karate blogger, Jesse Enkamp, and I thoroughly recommend you read not only through this article, but through many of his other pieces.
The article above covers some of the variations I discussed in how to learn the kata. Mirroring it, practicing it in reverse, breaking it into pieces, top-half and bottom-half practice only etc.
Perhaps the most interesting way to practice, one that I have used since I first started training, is visualisation. Now, I’m a little biased, as I know that I am very lucky in my ability to memorise kata in the first place (and therefore being affectionately called a “kata absorbing sponge”), however I truly believe that you have to think about every element of a kata in order for your body to be able to then connect with it and replicate it. I’m going to try and look into the science of this.
In the meanwhile, keep reading, keep training, and when in doubt, ask. I’m always here to help.
I would like to thank Sensei Ian of Kimesanchin for inviting Zanshin over to compete at their local club kata tournament.
With myself and 4 students competing, we managed to walk away with two medals! Congratualtions to Peter Downes 7th Kyu for his 3rd place win, and I was lucky enough (by, I think, 0.1 of a point) to win gold in my category.
The rest are determined to come back next year and win something for the club. It’ll take plenty of hard work and training, but I am certain they will be able to do so ^_^

Just a reminder that we will not be open on Good Friday (25th March). So final training at Oakmeeds of the month is the 18th!
Also, as of April 1st we will be reopening the second session on a Friday evening, 7:15 to 8:15. And no, it’s not a joke 😉

Let’s hope this summer holds! We as a club want to get out into the community, and what better way to start than with a couple of fetes? Join us for these upcoming events:
Burgess Hill Town Fayre – 12th June 2016 – 11am to 4pm
Our first time trying to pitch a tent up at Burgess Hill Town Fayre, let’s show the locals a little of what our club has been training for.
Stall set up will be at 09:15. We will have a public performance starting at 12:20 for twenty minutes. Please wear your training Gi and white shoes / socks (ideally thin trainers as opposed to bulky ones). Hopefully the sun holds out!
Cowfold Fete – 2nd July 2016 – 10am onwards
After a dreary event in 2014, we’re hoping this year the 2nd of July will have sunshine! We will be setting up a gazebo and table, and hopefully squeeze in a demo or two.
Horsham Sparks in the Park – 10th July 2016 – 12pm onwards
The 2014 event was extremely well attended, and very very sunny, so bring sun-cream! As with Cowfold we hope to have a large demo area and demo slot, so be sure to practice your kata and come and show it off.
More to come as they are arranged…

A big, belated congratulations to Holly Brightey for passing her 9th Kyu grading under Sensei Gordon Hoare 5th Dan a few weeks back. She put a lot of effort into learning the basics of Wado karate and displayed them with plenty of confidence.
9th kyu, a red belt, is just the first step for what will hopefully be her very long martial arts journey. She joins her older brother and father, Daniel and Mark Brightey, who have been training in the Dojo since 2010.
Hello all! On Sunday I was lucky enough to enjoy yet another of the annual Mittsu-ji temple kata courses under Sensei Gary Swift 8th Dan.
For those who do not know, the ‘Temple Kata’ are Jit-te ‘Temple Hand’, Ji-han/Ji-on ‘Temple Sound’, and Ji-in ‘Temple Ground’. As written on the BWK website:
‘Three Temple Kata’. 参慈形
Refers to the 3-temple Kata of British Wadokai. Ji’tte, Ji’han and Ji’in form a group of kata beginning with the same characteristic kamae, which obviously has roots in ancient Chinese boxing. Read more…
With around a dozen in attendance, including several from Grey Wolf Karate and from another club within the BWF, Kimesanchin, the 4 hour course managed to cover in detail the kaisetsu and bunkai of the first kata, Jit-te. The remaining two kata, albeit in not as much detail, were edged in to the remaining two hours.
Here are some of the photos from the day:
