Sensei Pete
Sensei Pete Collier Nidan
Karate
Sensei Pete Collier took up karate later in life at the age of 40 after watching his eldest daughter work up through the grades of Wado Ryu training. He trained initially with Zanshin Wado under Sensei Oren Teichmann and Sensei Mark Brown, later adding additional training under Sensei Gordon Hoare 7th Dan Renshi at Horsham Dokuja Karate-do Wadokai (DKW).
Sensei Pete took his 1st Dan grading in September 2018 under Sensei Gary Swift 9th Dan Hanshi, passing both physical and written elements well above the pass score. Sensei Pete started teaching as an assistant instructor at Zanshin shortly after.
He has continued the association with Horsham DKW club and is also an assistant instructor and child protection officer at that club, cementing the long term relationship between the two clubs.
In July 2022 he was awarded 2nd Dan by Sensei Gary Swift.
Sensei Pete would be the first to say that while not a natural athlete and coming to karate later in life, it proves that with hard work and focus you can achieve things beyond your expectations. Having been bitten by the Wado bug, he is now broadening his knowledge of other style and associated martial arts.
Personal Life
Sensei Pete has been a technologist for over 30 years both in terms of career and elsewhere. This includes maintaining the British and International Wado websites, and extends as far as being a participant in robotic combat since the late 1990s, including participating in the Robot Wars TV show.
A guitar player since the age of 13, he began building and restoring guitars during the COVID lockdowns and is planning to do more of this in the future.
